Where are documents stored?

Learn where case materials live after you add them — and what that means for access and exports.

Overview

When you use Add Documents, files are stored securely in SeraCase’s protected infrastructure for your account and case. They’re available in Evidence and related surfaces while you work, and you can create an export when you need an offline package under your control.

Why this feature exists

Knowing where materials live reduces uncertainty — especially when you’re deciding what to keep offline versus in the product.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Add documents in the product

Use Add Documents so materials enter your private case workspace rather than a scattered set of personal folders alone.

  2. 2

    Work from Evidence

Open Evidence to browse what’s stored for the current case.

  3. 3

Export when you need a local copy

Use Export to download a package you store yourself.

  4. 4

Review My Data for lifecycle status

Open My Data to understand retention, trash, and related controls.

Best practices

  • Keep critical court originals or certified copies according to counsel’s guidance — the app is preparation, not your only archive if you need more.
  • Don’t email yourself ad-hoc copies as your only backup strategy; use Export deliberately.

Productivity tips

  • After major filings arrive, add them once to SeraCase and export a clean package for counsel if needed.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a file on your phone camera roll is “in the case” before you Add Documents.
  • Deleting the only offline copy because it’s in SeraCase without checking retention needs.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files stored on my device only?

No. Adding documents stores them securely in SeraCase for your account so you can access your case across sessions. You can still keep local copies via Export.

Can I see infrastructure details?

Yes. Visit the Trust Center for security and infrastructure overview pages.
