Topics and themes
Use Topics to group related themes across your case — parenting, finances, communication, and more.
Overview
Topics collect related materials and ideas by theme. While Timeline answers “when,” Topics help answer “what is this about?” Sera may suggest themes as she reviews documents; you can refine them as your understanding grows.
Why this feature exists
Legal matters aren’t only chronological. Themes help you prepare conversations, affidavits, and questions for counsel without rereading everything.
Step-by-step
- 1
Open Topics
From primary navigation, open Topics for your current case.
- 2
Review themes Sera suggested
Scan proposed topics after document review. Rename or adjust anything that doesn’t match how you think about the matter.
- 3
Explore what’s inside a topic
Open a topic to see related materials and connections that belong to that theme.
- 4
Use topics while you prepare
Before Ask Sera or Export, check that major themes you care about are represented.
Best practices
- Keep topic names short and recognizable months later.
- Avoid creating dozens of tiny overlapping topics — prefer clear themes.
- Pair Topics with Timeline: theme for substance, chronology for sequence.
Productivity tips
- Create a topic for each area you’ll discuss with your lawyer in the next meeting.
- Ask Sera to summarize one topic when you need a focused briefing.
Common mistakes
- Using Topics as a dumping ground for unrelated items.
- Ignoring topic suggestions forever, then struggling to find thematic materials.
Frequently asked questions
Are Topics the same as folders?
Not exactly. Topics are thematic groupings across your case, not a rigid filing cabinet. Documents can relate to more than one theme when that reflects reality.
Do I have to use Topics?
No, but they’re helpful once your case has enough materials for patterns to appear. Start simple.
