Linking evidence

Connect documents to timeline events so every important moment has a clear source.

Overview

Linking evidence ties materials to the chronology. When an event has a linked document, you can move from “what happened” to “here’s the page that shows it” in one step — essential for review, Ask Sera context, and exports.

Why this feature exists

Unlinked timelines are hard to trust. Links make your story verifiable for you and clearer for anyone who reviews your package later.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Open a timeline event

Choose an event that needs a source — especially hearings, filings, and orders.

  2. 2

    Attach the supporting item

Link the Evidence item or document that best proves or explains that moment.

  3. 3

    Prefer the strongest source

If several files mention the same event, link the clearest primary document.

  4. 4

    Remove incorrect links

If a link was attached by mistake, update or remove it so the event stays accurate.

Best practices

  • Link as you accept new timeline events — don’t save all linking for the end.
  • One excellent source beats five weak attachments on a critical event.
  • When a document supports multiple events, link it where each connection is truly relevant.

Productivity tips

  • After Review with Sera or a batch upload, walk the new events and link sources in one pass.
  • Use Evidence Gaps to spot claims that still have no linked material.

Common mistakes

  • Linking the wrong PDF because titles look similar.
  • Leaving key deadlines with no source document attached.

Frequently asked questions

Can one document link to many events?

Yes, when it genuinely supports more than one moment — for example, an order that sets several dates.

Do links change the original file?

No. Links organize relationships inside your case. The uploaded document itself stays intact.
