Creating your first case

Open a private case workspace and set it up for success.

Overview

A case is your private workspace for one legal matter. Documents, timeline events, evidence, tasks, and exports all stay bound to that case.

Why this feature exists

Keeping matters separate protects clarity and privacy — and keeps Sera’s recommendations focused on the right context.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Go to Home or Create Case

Choose Create Case and enter a clear case name.

  2. 2

    Add optional details

Court file number, opposing party, or location can be added now or later in case settings.

  3. 3

    Select the case as current

Use the case selector in the sidebar when you have more than one case.

  4. 4

    Add your first documents

Start with the most important materials — orders, notices, or key correspondence.

Best practices

  • Name cases so you’ll recognize them months later.
  • Don’t put multiple unrelated disputes in one case.

Productivity tips

  • Create the case first, then batch-upload a week of materials.

Common mistakes

  • Using a vague name like “Case 1”.
  • Uploading files before creating a case.

Frequently asked questions

Can other people see my case?
