Supported file types

See which document and image formats you can add to SeraCase — and how to prepare files that work best.

Overview

SeraCase accepts the formats people use most in legal prep: PDFs, common images, and other everyday document types. Clear, standard files give Sera the best chance to read text and organize materials.

Why this feature exists

Knowing what’s supported before you upload saves time and avoids failed adds when you’re already under pressure.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Prefer PDF when you can

Court documents, letters, and multi-page packages work best as PDF. Keep pages upright and complete.

  2. 2

Use common image formats for photos

Phone photos and screenshots typically work as JPEG, PNG, or similar everyday image types. Flatten screenshots so the full message is visible.

  3. 3

    Check size and clarity

Very large files or tiny, compressed images may slow review. If a photo is hard for you to read, Sera will struggle too.

  4. 4

    Convert unusual formats before upload

If a file won’t open on your computer in a standard viewer, convert it to PDF or a common image type first.

Best practices

  • Export email threads to PDF when the full conversation matters.
  • Capture one document per photo when possible instead of a table full of papers.
  • Keep original files; SeraCase stores what you add for your case workspace.

Productivity tips

  • Batch-convert a folder of scans to PDF before a large Add Documents session.
  • For text messages, export or screenshot complete threads with dates visible.

Common mistakes

  • Uploading password-protected PDFs without removing the password first.
  • Adding HEIC or niche formats that your device hasn’t converted yet.
  • Cropping out dates, signatures, or page numbers that give context.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload Word documents?

When possible, save or export as PDF before adding. PDF preserves layout and is more reliable for review and export packages.

What if my file type isn’t accepted?

Convert to PDF or a common image format, then try Add Documents again. If it still fails, contact support with the file type (not the file contents).
